Artificial Intelligence According to Meta: A New Standard for Social Apps

At the end of March 2025, Meta AI officially launched in Italy. After a successful debut in the United States, Meta’s virtual assistant arrives in Europe as well, natively integrated into WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. This isn’t just a technical update — it’s a clear strategic move: Mark Zuckerberg aims to play a leading role in the world of artificial intelligence, directly challenging OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Alphabet (owned by Google). The goal? To position Meta not only as a social media giant, but also as a top player in the AI sector.

What is Meta AI, exactly?
Meta AI is a generative virtual assistant based on the LLaMA language model (currently at version 3.2), designed to provide support within Meta’s suite of apps. What sets it apart from many competitors is that Meta AI doesn’t require any additional apps to be installed. For example, simply being in WhatsApp or another Meta platform and typing @MetaAI in chat, or clicking the new blue icon now appearing on millions of devices, is enough to start. From there, users can interact with the assistant just like they would with a friend or colleague.

Meta AI Features and Privacy Limitations in Europe
The AI can write complex texts, translate content with accurate idiomatic style, answer questions, perform real-time web searches, and even moderate group chats. Teams or users managing large conversations will benefit from Meta AI’s group admin capabilities in WhatsApp: it can add or remove participants, summarize discussions, and step in when someone breaks group rules. However, not everything is available yet. Visual features like image generation and analysis — highly appreciated in the U.S. — are not yet active in Italy. Meta is taking a gradual approach to ensure compliance with European data protection regulations. It also assures that AI conversations remain separate from other chats and that users can delete their history at any time. Moreover, data from European users has not been used to train the model.

Opportunities and Future Scenarios
Looking ahead, Zuckerberg and his team aim to build a consistent AI ecosystem across all Meta platforms, including devices like the Meta Ray-Ban glasses and Oculus Quest 2. A standalone Meta AI app is also in development, with advanced features and — very likely — a subscription model, similar to the premium versions of ChatGPT. If the initiative succeeds, the apps we use daily could evolve into true personal assistants: capable of responding, suggesting, organizing, and perhaps even predicting our needs.
