Communicating on Radio: The Art of Voice in an Everlasting Medium

Today, if one wishes to discuss a topic, numerous visual aids like photographs and videos can be utilized, creating interaction across different media and engaging multiple senses. However, in radio, voice and sound are the sole means of communication available.

Is it still worthwhile to consider radio in an increasingly technological world, amidst social media and multichannel platforms?

Indeed, radio is not a dead medium because it is accessible, immediate, and versatile. It functions without internet, accompanying people during daily activities such as commuting, and has adapted to the digital age with podcast and streaming, alongside its web version. Furthermore, radio is a communication medium capable of creating a direct and human connection with the listener. Primarily, it achieves this by using voice in an immediate and personal manner, preferring simple terms that are easily understood by all, including distracted listeners. Additionally, radio serves as companion or background noise during other activities. The consistent presence of familiar voices fosters habits, trust, and a sense of companionship.

So, what are the tips and best practices for those interested in radio communication?

If faced with a microphone to broadcast, discuss one’s company, or simply narrate a story in a few minutes, the only tool available is obviously the voice. Thus, one can play with and modulate the tone, speed, and pitch of their voice. Gestures, facial expressions, or graphical and written aids cannot be used in any sense.

It is therefore crucial to work on several aspects to handle live broadcasts effectively:

  • Always carry a water bottle to hydrate the voice and avoid the unpleasant sensation of dry mouth while speaking.
  • Speak clearly and distinctly, taking the necessary time to formulate sentences.
  • Vary tone and rhythm to avoid monotony (which is detrimental in radio!).
  • Try to smile while speaking; this warms up the voice and makes it more welcoming.
  • Maintain the correct distance from the microphone, about 5 fingers’ width.
  • Adapt one’s style to the program: for example, more energy or calmness based on the format, and use more or less technical language depending on the target audience and broadcast time.
  • Engage the listener and create a connection by directly addressing those who are listening.

In conclusion, radio remains a vibrant medium full of resources, allowing for unique expression compared to other media but should not be underestimated!
