Heineken flips the smartphone (literally) to save social interaction

The latest creation from the Dutch brand is called “The Flipper”, a smartphone case that automatically flips open when it hears the word “Cheers”, isolating the phone and returning attention to the present moment.
Behind this idea, as simple as it is brilliant, is Simone Giertz, an inventor and famous YouTuber who utilized AI-based voice recognition technology. Once it detects the magic word of the toast, it activates a small internal robotic arm that flips the device. The result? The smartphone is silenced, giving value to a chat among friends or the celebration of an important moment.
With this innovation, Heineken continues its mission against an increasingly common phenomenon: “phubbing” — the habit of ignoring those around us to focus on our smartphones. A prevalent behavior that, according to a study by the National Library of Medicine, affects up to 47% of adults, who are unable to detach from their screens even during crucial social moments.
“The Flipper serves as a reminder not to be distracted by social media when trying to socialize,” explained its creator. Turning off (or in this case, flipping) the smartphone is the first step to sparking real conversations. Nabil Nasser, Global Head of Heineken, also emphasized the initiative’s significance: “Smartphones and their social apps are essential in our daily lives, but the habit of scrolling feeds instead of enjoying personal interactions is affecting the quality of our face-to-face interactions.”
