New Jeep® Grand Cherokee 2022, an electric breakthrough

Jeep unveiled the fifth-generation Grand Cherokee, including the 4xe version, the first electrified Grand Cherokee, and the new Trailhawk, the Grand Cherokee with benchmark 4×4 performance.

The brand is aiming for a zero-emission future, in fact their mission is called “Zero Emission Freedom”.

After the Compass, Renegade and Wrangler, it’s now the turn of the 4xe version of the Grand Cherokee: Plug-In Hybrid technology ensures excellent fuel efficiency and great attention to the environment. The estimated range in full electric is about 40km, the engine has a power of 375 hp, the traction system is a 4×4 Quadra trac II and the maximum towing capacity is 2,720 kg.

The estimated range is about 40km in full electric mode and the propulsion system combines two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, a maximum towing capacity of 2,720 kg, and an eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. The systems and electronics are sealed and waterproof, and the car in fact boasts a “Trail Rated” badge and a fording capacity of 61 inches, thanks in part to Jeep’s Quadra-Lift™ air suspension. The system automatically adjusts shock absorber calibration based on road conditions to provide greater comfort, stability and control, but it can also be controlled manually.

The car offers several types of hybrid drive, ideal for different ncesses: Hybrid, Electric and eSave. In addition, the Grand Cherokee 4xe operates in hybrid mode when the battery reaches a minimum level of charge. The Uconnect system provides the driver with access to Eco Coaching pages to monitor energy flow, check the impact of regenerative braking, schedule charging times to take advantage of the most favorable rates and view driving history with a detailed fuel economy list.

As far as off-road is concerned, the performance of Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is very high and is guaranteed by three all-wheel drive systems: Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trace II and Quadra-Drive II. The Selec-Terrain system allows you to choose from five different driving modes, useful in different situations: Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, Mud/Sand. Another great feature of the Grand Cherokee 2022 is the front axle disconnect system.

In practice, when the car senses that road conditions do not require the use of all-wheel drive the front axle is automatically disconnected and the vehicle switches to two-wheel drive operation, thereby benefiting fuel economy and efficiency. All-wheel drive is automatically reinserted when the system detects the need. Performance is also optimized with standard all-terrain tires and an off-road camera.

The Trailhawk version will be ideal for off-road driving: it combines 40 km (estimated) of range in full electric driving, fuel economy of 57 MPGe and the legendary 4×4 capabilities of the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. Design-wise, the Trailhawk version will have 18-inch wheels with blue trim. Blue tow hooks and a black and matte blue “Trailhawk” anti-glare decal on the hood.

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee 2022 represents a breakthrough, thanks to a completely new, specifically developed architecture. This is a flexible architecture designed for all models, two-row, three-row and 4xe electrified versions. Fifth-generation models feature optimized dimensions to ensure off-road capabilities and to enable electrification with the 4xe system.

The final phase of the launch will take place in early 2022 and the first Grand Cherokee 4xe will be marketed first in North America and then in global markets.
