“Milan doesn’t stop, Italy doesn’t stop, Fiat doesn’t stop, Fiat starts again and does so with a totally new car”, these are the words that Olivier François, FCA’s Chief Marketing Officer, used to introduce the Turin-based company’s new electric car.
The Triennale hosted the event, reserved for the Italian press, an important step for the brand, which is on the side of the environment and for the occasion has hired Oscar winner Leonardo Di Caprio as its testimonial, who has been committed to eco-sustainability for years.
The new proposal from the Turin-based company is completely electric, thanks to the engine powered by Lithium-Ion batteries with a capacity of 42kWh, the autonomy reaches 320 km with WLTP cycle. The engine has a power output of 87 kW and allows acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 9 seconds and a top speed (self-limited) of 150 km/h.
Charging times are optimised thanks to the 85 kW fast charger system, which enables the battery to be recharged in a very short time. An 80% charge takes just 35 minutes.
The launch edition of the car, ‘La Prima’, also includes the Easy Wallbox, a home charging system that allows you to plug into your home socket.
For improved range management, the new 500 is equipped with three driving modes: Normal, Range (including a ‘one pedal’ mode that recovers energy when the car decelerates) and Sherpa (minimises fuel consumption by limiting speed and certain functions, ensuring the car reaches its destination).
It also offers, and is the first car in its segment to do so, level 2 autonomous driving.
The styling of the new 500 combines tradition and innovation, the dimensions have increased by a few centimetres, giving more space to the interior but without affecting the car’s winning aesthetic. There has also been a slight change in the look of the full-LED headlights, which have become more ovoid and are cut off at bonnet height, while the rear lights are slightly more protruding and, when switched on, form the letter E, which stands for “electric”. The handles are electric and retractable – a nice detail!
Inside is the latest generation Uconnect5 multimedia system with a 10.25-inch screen, compatible with Apple Car Play and Android Auto.
Three unique variants of the car were also unveiled, created in collaboration with Armani, Bvlgari and Kartell, each with unique features representative of their respective designers. They will be auctioned off and the proceeds will be donated to charity.
The “La Prima” edition, convertible, full optional and including Easy Wallbox is already available for order. The price is €37,900.
